Ryszard Horowitz: Born in Kraków, Ryszard and his family survived the holocaust thanks to Oscar Schindler. He spent his early post-war years with Roman Polanski and many evenings at the “Barany” cabaret, where he developed a passion for jazz, photographing many of the giants who came to perform in Poland during the 1950’s. The cabaret was located in the vaulted cellars of the Potocki Palace on Kraków’s main square (then HQ of the communist party, of course..!). Ryszard emigrated to the US in 1959. A New Yorker ever since, he achieved international recognition with technically avant-garde, dreamy, powerful and at times humourous photocompositions.
